Week 49: Shield

I used two shield-related things for this, a shield shape and a sketch of the Canadian Shield which is a rock formation that covers the Eastern part of Canada. I grew up boating on Georgian Bay and this sort of rocky scene is very familiar.

I was having fun drawing my own banners for this one. I started doing small wildflower sketches in drop caps on stationery for pen pals, and I liked doing them so much I put one above the shield to anchor the banner.

Up Geology!

Overview of Month 11 – Weeks 44 to 48

I was saddened when my friend Rose dropped out after Week 46. For this reason, during the latter weeks I only show two images for each prompt. I was away packing and moving house, so Bev forged on alone to the end of the year by herself.

I am just now catching up, and have 4 more sketches to do before the end of the year wrap-up.

Week 48: Cubism

This is Pinky, one of my cat figurines.

Pinky_CatFigurine

Pinky recently read about Picasso and other Cubists and became quite enthralled with the possibilities. He has never been the same.

Week48_Cubism_JJ

This points out the danger in having literate cat figurines: they read books, they develop a fondness for unfathomable artistic movements, and that’s the last you see of them.

Materials I used:

Staedtler 2H pencil
Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils
Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils
Large 28 year-old ceramic cat figurine who secretly admires Georges Braque.

Week 47: Quay

I find this a very interesting building. They’ve combined all kinds of angles and patterns in the stone, and the walkways and plants really add to the feeling. It is in New Westminster, B.C., Canada on the Fraser River. Lots of stuff going on here, but I managed to get enough detail that I think the building is recognizable.

Lamy Safari pen with Noodler’s Lexington Gray ink
Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencil

Week 45: Chickasaw

I am finishing up the last eight sketches here from last year. It took me longer to get some equilibrium back and find all my supplies after I moved across the country.

I thought this was going to be really easy and I would find lots of photo references online for Chickasaw clothing, art, crafts etc. There was not much was available, at least not anything I was keen on drawing. The one I finally decided to draw was this gorget. I’ve heard of torcs worn around the neck but never gorgets, it was fascinating to learn about these and there are still Chickasaw artists making them today.

I recently bought a new gizmo, a Tombow Mono Zero eraser which you hold like a pencil and it has a micro-sized eraser head which is good for erasing highlights or just getting rid of pencil lines in tight spots. I used that on this drawing.

When searching for a suitable banner shape to draw, I was consulting a Dover clip art book that had one I liked. While looking at it, I realized it used a very easy technique for drawing it up. You simply draw the face of the ribbon in any shape or curve to fit the titling you want, and then fashion loops at the side and join them to the main ribbon with lines. What a kick.

Materials I used:

Staedtler 2H pencil
Faber-Castell B, 4B, and 6B pencils
Tortillon
Lamy Safari pen with Noodler’s Lexington Gray ink
Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils

Seven more to go until I can start my next Sketch 52 project that I have planned. Bev finished them all for 2015 and I will be showing her excellent work in overviews for last November and December, as well as several pictures Rose did before she dropped out.

Where Am I?

I am behind because I am moving cross-country and I was out of the province travelling for almost two weeks in an attempt to find housing.

I’m not sure if I can catch up right now, I’m trying to do a couple of sketches this week. However, I am taking a stripped-down kit of art supplies and my art journals with me so I will finish this project for 2015 in early 2016. I will be living in a motel for a time so I’ll need a good focus while I am in limbo, and sketching will be perfect.

When all else fails and you are adrift, you can count on art to keep you grounded and creative. Plus I’m taking all my fountain pens and ink with me.

When I finish up the prompts from this year, I hope to do some sketching of local towns, buildings, and stores during my wandering and post them here.

Have a good 2016 everybody and remember to use your art supplies and have fun!
