Week 14: Betroth

He was first attracted to her hair, and then discovered that they had a mutual interest in illustrator Rockwell Kent as well as the history of Meissen porcelain. She mentioned that she loved poetry and he felt a funny feeling in his chest. He said one of his favourite poems was The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry, and she got excited and told him that she had written up that poem in calligraphy with green and purple ink, and now had it framed in her living room. They looked at each other, reluctant to part.

For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free. [Wendell Berry]

That night after a solitary dinner, he couldn’t concentrate on his biography of Walt Whitman, and knew he would ask her the question…

I just knew you were going to come up with something great! I think the Owl and the Pussycat’s child has grown up and fallen in love (with the help of Wendell Berry). 🙂 I love all the detail you put in the girl’s hair and the roses around the lettering. No wonder your hand is aching! Now go relax with a cup of tea and a book of poetry… 😀

    • Oh boy Bev, I did the lettering and florals on Wednesday, and then the drawing on Saturday because it took me that long to decide on the figures. That left me Sunday to paint the two and it took me a long time. I think I spent about 7 hours on this! I just got charmed by the whole idea as it looks like a book illustration.
